Professor Madjid Samii (MD, Ph.D.) is a world-renowned Neurosurgeon from Hannover, Germany. He
is known across the globe for his enormous contribution to the field of neurosurgery. He is one
of the
eminent neurosurgeons instrumental in the development of modern neurosurgery. In 1967, he
introduced the first surgical microscope for its use in neurosurgery in Germany. In 1977, he was
credited for establishing the first micro-neurosurgical training laboratory in Germany.
Professor Samii, as the President of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) from
1997-2001, was the originator of the WFNS Neurosurgical Instruments Set, a project set up with
the
aim of improving the treatment of patients in the world’s poorest countries. He was also the
initiator
and founder of the WFNS Foundation in the year 2000, to help and support neurosurgeons from
developing countries by providing various neurosurgical equipment as well as training and
education
with its fellowships. He also initiated the Young Neurosurgeon’s Forum of WFNS dedicated to
young
neurosurgeons from all over the world. In the year 2000, he established the “International
Neuroscience Institute (INI) in Hannover, Germany, also known as “Brain of Hannover,” due to the
building’s unique design.
Professor Samii is credited with numerous honorary doctorates, awards, honorary and visiting
professorships and memberships of neurosurgical societies. A Medal of Honor of WFNS is dedicated
to and named after him.
Professor Samii has more than 500 publications in Indexed journals. In addition, he has written
numerous book chapters in neurosurgical textbooks. He has also given more than 1000 lectures and
presentations dealing with various topics in neurosurgery as invited faculty or guest of honor
at
national and international congresses.
Neurosurgeons across the globe, including India, had the distinct honor to be trained under his
mentorship over the last 5 decades. Professor Samii has deeply influenced the neurosurgical
community and neurosurgeons with his philosophy and skills.
In 2002, some former pupils of Prof. Madjid Samii founded a group called MASSIN, Madjid Samii
Society of International Neurosurgeons. This group was headed by Klaus von Wild from Münster,
Germany, Ricardo Ramina from Curitiba, Brazil and Marcos Tatagiba from Tübingen, Germany. The
aim of MASSIN was to give continuity of Professor Samii's philosophy, operative techniques and
management principles in the different fields of neurological surgery. The MASSIN congresses are
bi-annual events with Interim meetings held across the globe.
The 9th MASCIN congress is being held in Mumbai, India. It would be a great honour and privilege
to
propagate Professor Samii’s philosophy and legacy during the meeting.
